Windows 11’s release date is today, but not EVERYONE will get it at once

Windows 11 begins rolling out Oct. 5, but Microsoft has said it might take until mid-2022 for everyone to get the upgrade.

Microsoft says Windows 11 will start rolling out on Oct. 5.

Windows 11 will begin its wide release today. We’ve already tested and published a full review of Windows 11 (it’s familiar, but fresh). Microsoft’s first major operating system update in six years is available as a free download for existing Windows users starting today, but the OS won’t roll out to every compatible Windows device at once and it won’t have every major new feature promised just yet, Microsoft said in an August blog post

Now playing: Windows 11: Will your computer be able to run it? What…
3:43

While the first general release of Windows 11 will include features like a more streamlined, Mac-like design, an updated Start menu, new multitasking tools and integrated Microsoft Teams, it will not include one of the most anticipated updates: support for Android mobile apps in its new app store. Microsoft also didn’t offer a date for when Android apps would be available either, other than saying that they would roll out in a “preview” test “over the coming months,” according to the post.

And just because you have a compatible Windows device doesn’t mean you’ll be able to run Windows 11 starting today. The launch will be “phased and measured,” with new eligible devices getting the upgrade first and the rest getting offered the free upgrade sometime between October and mid-2022, depending on your hardware, age of device and other factors. You’ll get a notification from Windows Update letting you know when Windows 11 is available to you, or you can check manually (here’s more on how to download Windows 11 when the time comes and how to try the preview version).

When it unveiled Windows 11 in June, Microsoft had said the OS would begin rolling out around the holiday season and continue into 2022. But several subsequent hints suggested that the release date would actually be in October: During the reveal event, a Microsoft Teams message popped up on the demo screen that said “excited to turn it up to 11… can’t wait for October!” And many press images for Windows 11 include a date of Oct. 20 in the taskbar, The Verge noted. Plus, Walmart’s website lists a “free Upgrade to Windows October 2021 when available” on certain laptops. Microsoft confirmed the Oct. 5 release date on its blog at the end of August.

Until Microsoft’s new operating system arrives, you can check to see if your computer will be able to automatically update to Windows 11 (you’ll need to be running Windows 10 first to do so — here’s how to download Windows 10 for free if you haven’t yet). But even if it isn’t deemed compatible, there will be a way to manually download a version that is not supported by Microsoft.

You also don’t have to upgrade to Windows 11 right away if you don’t want to — Microsoft will still support Windows 10 through October 2025.

Shopping Ideas from Thais Akerman

Thais Akerman’sKitchen” post for her blog appeals just because it is the opposite of all the usual kitchens that are almost always too neat. This one reminds me of the summer kitchen my aunt and uncle had down by their two-acre garden. The counters were scavenged and had no doors. Instead, my aunt made a bright, colorful curtain uncannily similar to this one. When they harvested, everything was cleaned, peeled, and canned down in the summer kitchen. The compost piles were down by the garden as was the root cellar so everything was to hand. And of course, my aunt and uncle ‘borrowed’ me during the harvest. All the remaining items are listed in her blog credits, but my mind is fixated on the counters.

In “Yakitama”, Thais again finds a unique piece that adds humor and character to her style, in fashion as well as decor. For this one, it’s the eggcellent bag that caught my eye. I love the setting and her stack of cookies, but the central piece for me is the egg bag.

  • parfait. Yakitama Satchel ® was a gatcha but it now sold as a fatpack
  •  Cookies: *Tentacio*   Cold wind cookies

I like Thais Akerman’s blog though its name Maria Bunita is a mystery. I am guessing an early name. At the top is a pretty watercolor spray of flowers that gives readers an immediate sense of her fashion aesthetic. Across the top are links to her social media and on the right sidebar, there is a small bio, a search window, archives, and recent posts. Tags fill the footer. Her posts consist of one picture and complete credits. You can read each post from the home page without clicking through. Everything is well-arranged and easy to find.

There is one caveat, though: When checking the SLurl for Parfait, I arrived at an empty spot and fell to earth. The link in the story is correct, though. This reminds me of my suggestion that bloggers include creator names just in case stores move or change their names. The creator’s name will always lead us to the store even if they change their store name from  Alpha to Zed.

Windows 11 releases October 5th – here’s how to upgrade for free

As I Have Stated In The Past Always Keep Your Machine Running At The Top, This Update Is Definitely Changes How We Will Do Things In The Future! Windows 11 Is Geared A Lot More For Gaming And Will Change How We Do Things In Our Virtual World Too.

Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 11 is arriving on October 5th. The long-awaited update to Windows 10 will be available as a free update for certain existing systems, although several products are on the way that are tailor-made for the new OS.

While many users will gain instant access on October 5th, Microsoft will be rolling out the Windows 11 update in waves. Depending on your device, you might be waiting weeks – or months – before the update is pushed to your laptop. In general, expect to see the OS rolled out to the latest products before coming to anything older and less mainstream.

“Following the tremendous learning’s from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience,” Aaron Woodman, general manager of Windows marketing at Microsoft, said. “We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022.”

Windows 11 Required PC Specs

Microsoft has released detailed hardware requirements for Windows 11 ahead of its launch later this year. If you don’t meet the specs, don’t worry – Windows 10 will continue to receive support until October 14th, 2025.

  • 1GHz processor with two or more cores

  • 64-bit compatible

  • 4GB RAM

  • 64GB storage

  • GPU compatible with DirectX 12

  • UEFI, Secure Boot capable system firmware

  • TPM version 2.0

  • 720p or greater display

  • Internet connection

The development team also mentioned you’ll want to ensure you’re running Windows 10, version 20H1 or later for the “best Windows 11 upgrade experience.”

If all the above specs look like gibberish, just know that most PCs less than four years old should be compatible with Windows 11. Microsoft is also planning to launch a PC Health Check app in the near future, which will analyze your system and let you know if you’re eligible for Windows 11.

How to Upgrade to Windows 11 for Free

Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 will follow the same format as previous system updates. Specifically, it’ll use the Windows Update software preinstalled on all Microsoft systems to make the process entirely painless. Here’s how to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free:

  • Ensure you’re running the latest version of Windows 10.

  • Verify your PC is compatible with Windows 11 hardware requirements.

  • Ensure your PC is connected to the internet.

  • When the Windows 11 update is ready for your system, you’ll receive a notification from the Windows Update software.

  • If you don’t get a notification, you can search for the new OS by opening Windows Update and selecting “Check for updates.”

  • Wait for the download to complete – then start enjoying Windows 11!

Remember – Windows 11 is rolling out in phases, with Microsoft hoping to hit all eligible systems by the middle of 2022. If you don’t receive a notification by then, make sure your system meets the minimum requirements for the OS – otherwise, you’ll have to manually load it onto your system.

What’s New With Windows 11?

Windows 11 isn’t an incremental update to Windows 10 – it’s a full-blown re-imagining. From a new UI to Android app integration, here’s why you should be excited about the free upgrade.

  • Reworked Interface: Beyond a basic refresh (which includes lighter colors and cleaner lines), the Start menu has been moved from the bottom left corner to the middle of the screen. You’ll be able to move this back to its original location, but Microsoft thinks the new position is more accessible and central to the action.

  • Android Apps: Select Android apps will be usable on Windows 11, including Twitter, Disney+ and more. You’ll find these listed directly on the Microsoft Store – and it’s a feature Windows users have been clamoring about for years.

  • Teams Update: Not only is Teams joining the Windows 11 taskbar, but it’s also getting a huge UI rework. With so many people working from home, the refreshed software might be the most exciting part of the update.

  • Built For Gaming: Microsoft is hoping to improve your gaming experience with Windows 11, offering features like DirectStorage, Auto HDR and built-in support for the Xbox app.

There’s plenty more to be excited about, and a full rundown of Windows 11 features can be found on its official website. Considering this is a free upgrade, October 5th should be an exciting day for Windows users.

The Digital Art of Mistero Hifeng

This week we immerse ourselves in the surreal digital art of Mistero Hifeng at Cammino e Vivo Capovolto.

Upon landing, the region feels like an art gallery crossed with a movie set: the type of thing that would cost millions of dollars in the physical world but can be created by anybody in Second Life.

Mistero’s style blends the abstract with symbolic imagery seamlessly. The use of light and water are key. Slow moving raindrops and a moving floor of water that looks like glimmering mercury… There are also several clocks strewn about haphazardly, perhaps an homage to Dali, one of the great figures of Surrealist art.

Abstract humanoid sculptures can be found throughout the space, often embracing each other. While they may seem plain from far away, closer inspection reveals that they express a wide range of emotions. The amount of detail given offers the hint of a narrative but the rest is a mystery for guests to put together. What is the purpose of the train tracks that lead nowhere? Mistero is indeed mysterious: he does not comment on the purpose of his installations. He does not offer any help to interpret it, which makes it even more powerful!

This region is a shining example of Second Life’s ability to serve as a conduit to one’s imagination. Come see Mistero Hifeng’s art today to experience the unique art of the metaverse.

Check out Mistero Hifeng’s socials for more information on his work.

Check Out These Windows 10 Security Settings

Recent versions of Windows 10 have security features built in that are designed to identify threats, eliminate vulnerabilities and make it harder for hackers and cyber criminals to do their dirty work. Let’s take a look at the Windows 10 Security Center, and explore all the features and settings there. Read on…

The Windows 10 Security Center

First, the good news. You don’t need to understand the workings of Data Execution Prevention, Address Space Layout Randomization, UEFI Secure Boot, or Structured Exception Handling Overwrite Protection. You don’t even have to memorize the acronyms that go along with them. All you need to know is that these “threat mitigation” features are part of Windows 10, and (if you turn them on) they’re working in the background to protect you from a variety of threats and cyber-attacks.

If you have Windows 10, you should be familiar with the Windows Security app, which is the hub for all security-related settings. Windows Defender (Microsoft’s built-in antivirus tool), Windows Firewall and a few other tools were merged into the Windows Security app in the Windows 10 Creators Update that was released in April, 2017.

As of this writing, the latest version of Windows 10 is the “May 2021 Update” which is also known as Version 21H1, Build 19043, Codename Iron. It’s just beginning to roll out via Windows Update, so if you still have the Windows 10 “October 2020 Update” (also known as Version 20H2, Version 2009, Build 19042, Codename Manganese) or the Windows 10 “May 2020 Update” (also confusingly known as Version 2004, Build 19041) – don’t worry, you’ll eventually get the latest update.

The Security Center app puts many Windows 10 security features in one place. You can fine-tune your anti-malware scanning options, tweak device settings, configure parental controls, or perform a “Fresh Start” if things get fouled up. To open the Windows Security app, just click the Defender shield icon in the notification area on the taskbar and click Open. OR, you can click on the Start menu and search for Windows Security.

Virus & threat protection is where you’ll find the Windows Defender malware scanning functions; toggles for real-time protection, cloud-based protection, controls for malware sample submission to Microsoft, the ability to exempt files or folders from Defender scans, notifications settings for Defender and Firewall, and threat definition update controls.

In the past, I’ve been critical of Microsoft Defender, the precursor of Windows Defender. I understand that the Windows 10 incarnation of this anti-malware tool is much improved. But you’re not locked into Microsoft’s security tools with Windows 10. You can still use Avast, Avira, BitDefender, PC Matic, or any other antivirus tool you like on Windows 10. If you a install a third-party antivirus or firewall product, Microsoft Defender and Firewall will be disabled automatically, and the presence of your antivirus tool will be indicated here. (After years of using Avast Antivirus, I switched to PC Matic, which uses a unique combination of protection strategies that I think are superior. You can read my review and recommendation in Review: PC Matic Gets a Zero!)

Device performance & health is where you can check for any issues with Windows Update and device drivers that may leave you vulnerable. Storage capacity and battery life issues may affect system performance/health. You’ll also see here if you’re current with your Windows updates, and if not, what might be causing the update bottleneck.

On the Device performance & health window you will also find the Fresh Start option that can re-install the latest version of Windows 10 if necessary. Microsoft recommends this option if your computer has performance issues or if you have too many unnecessary apps. Fresh Start will remove most of your apps, but will keep your personal data and Windows settings intact. Microsoft says that Fresh Start may improve your startup performance, memory usage, and battery life.

If you’ve had trouble getting the latest build via Windows Update, try Fresh Start. But first, try the Windows Update Troubleshooter. (In Settings, search for troubleshoot.)

Firewall & network protection includes Windows Firewall settings and the Network and Internet Troubleshooter.

Device Security offers Core isolation, a security feature that protects Windows from malicious software by isolating them in memory. You can try turning on the Memory integrity option here, which Microsoft recommends if your system supports it. If a check for incompatible drivers turns up any problems, you can click a link to review them and take further action.

App & browser control deals with Windows settings that can warn you of potentially dangerous Web content before it is downloaded by Edge or an app, or block sketchy content without warning, or let any old thing into your system (not recommended). The reputation-based protection will scan any file downloaded from the Internet, even if it was downloaded by a non-Microsoft browser or app. Exploit protection will help to ptotect against a range of incoming attacks. The isolated browsing option will install Microsoft Defender Application Guard, which adds additional safeguards to the Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Office products.

Family options include parental controls over the sites kids can visit, the hours and days when they can use the Internet, and the apps they can buy based upon “maturity ratings.” A Microsoft account is required to use Family options. A few years ago, I tried the parental controls built into Windows 8.1 on my son’s laptop, but he found that they were easily bypassed just by changing the date or time on the system clock. I have not tried this feature on a Windows 10 computer, so if you have experience with it, please share.

One final note — If you don’t need Internet Explorer, I suggest removing it from Windows 10 to give hackers one less program that may have exploitable vulnerabilities. IE is a favorite target because, historically, it has lots of vulnerabilities and it’s present on most Windows computers. To uninstall IE, go to Control Panel and select Uninstall a program. In the left-hand sidebar of the next screen, click on Turn Windows features on and off. Find Internet Explorer and uncheck its checkbox.

While you’re there, review all installed Windows features and uncheck any that you don’t need. The Edge browser cannot be uninstalled or disabled. I got rid of Windows Media Player, Windows Fax and Scan, the Internet Printing Client, and SMB 1.0 file sharing support. SMB1, as it’s called, enables file and printer sharing with old versions of Windows (NT, XP, and Server 2003); if you don’t need to do that, get rid of SMB1. When you have unchecked everything you want to remove, click OK. You’ll need to wait a few minutes while features are removed and your system reboots. Just be careful here… don’t remove any components if you’re not sure what they do.

A Very Special thanks to Bob Rankin for this post
